Comparing MDF and Plywood: Which is the Better Choice for Your DIY Project?

Updated: Apr 22

MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard) and plywood are both popular materials for DIY woodworking projects in the UK, and each material has its own unique advantages and disadvantages.

MDF is a composite material made from wood fibres and resin, which is compressed and heated to create a dense and smooth surface. It's a popular choice for furniture and cabinetry because it's affordable, easy to work with, and has a uniform surface that's easy to paint or finish. MDF is also available in different thicknesses, making it a versatile material for a range of woodworking applications.

Plywood, on the other hand, is made by gluing together thin layers of wood veneer in a cross-grain pattern, which makes it strong and durable. It's commonly used for building structures, such as walls and roofs, but it can also be used for woodworking projects that require strength and stability.

When deciding between MDF and plywood for your woodworking project, it's important to consider the specific requirements of the project. Here are some common applications for each material:

MDF:

  • Furniture, such as bookshelves, cabinets, and tables

  • Decorative mouldings and trim

  • Interior walls and partitions (I'd probably go with plasterboard here though!)

  • Speaker cabinets and audio equipment

  • Crafts and DIY projects, such as picture frames and storage boxes

Plywood:

  • Building structures, such as walls, roofs, and floors

  • Furniture, such as chairs, tables, and beds (look at the beauty above)

  • Outdoor projects, such as decks, fences, and garden furniture

  • Marine applications, such as boat building

  • High-stress applications, such as workbenches and tool storage

Ultimately, the choice between MDF and plywood will depend on the specific requirements of your project, as well as your personal preferences and budget. If you need a material that's strong, durable, and suitable for outdoor use, plywood may be the better choice. However, if you're looking for a material that's affordable, easy to work with, and has a smooth surface that's easy to paint or finish, MDF may be the way to go.
